Under the title “In the footsteps of Charlemagne - religious life in the Middle Ages between Aachen and Frankfurt am Main” a seminar with a four-day excursion will be held in the winter semester 2024/2025 under the joint direction of Prof. Dr. Martin Belz (Universität Osnabrück) und Natalie Giesen (KHG Osnabrückwill take place as a cooperative event. The event is open to students of Catholic theology and some students of other subjects and will address the following questions, among others:

Who was Charlemagne and what significance did he have for religion, society and politics in the Middle Ages? How was ecclesiastical, religious and social life organized in the cities of Aachen, Mainz and Frankfurt am Main in the period from around 500 to 1500? What importance did monasteries have in the Middle Ages - and what lasting significance do they still have today?

The focus is on Charlemagne, religious, ecclesiastical and social life in the Middle Ages as well as the art, culture and architecture of the time. The interreligious coexistence of Christians and Jews, monastic life and the challenges for religions and the church(es) in the past and present are also addressed as examples.

The seminar includes an introductory session, the excursion part von Samstag, 9. November 2024 bis Dienstag, 12. November 2024 and a final date. The number of participants is limited to 18, the Anmeldung ist zwischen 1. und 31. Mai 2024 possible. We look forward to numerous registrations!
